In 2nd grade; 1971. My father was a college professor and we lived in U of IL faculty housing; we were bussed to a school in a black community.

I became aware of race at an early age. I remember seeing the signs about segregation , for example white only, President Kennedy, and the 1960,s.

Kindergarten

I became aware of race as a small child growing up in a small town population 2000 where the City had “white and colored” drinking fountains.

I think my first introduction to race was via an Anime tv series in the 1980's loosely based on the characters of Little Women and the Civil War

After the murder of Mayor Harold Washington, the adults around me Marched collectively. It was both scary and exciting, but being Black was important.
